Canterbury is a popular destination located on the East Coast of the South Island the area has a diverse climate with extremely dry and hot conditions in the summer months, to freezing conditions in the depth of winter.

The region is flat fertile plans running down to sea level with majestic mountain peaks in the background and this diverse landscape provides some of the most stunning and rugged scenery in the South Island.

Christchurch is the largest city in the Canterbury Region with many attractions and activities available year round, the Christchurch Botanic Gardens are a popular destination which were established in 1863, the 21 hectare property provides 10 different gardens to view.

The Orana Wildlife Park is always a popular place to visit while in Christchurch, the park is currently New Zealand's only open range zoo where you can get up close to the wildlife, the park is also home to the only gorillas in New Zealand.

Akaroa on the Banks Peninsula is a must see destination while visiting Canterbury, a short drive from Christchurch on the Eastern coastline the scenery here is breath taking.

There are numerous bays and inlets dotted all around the peninsula to explore and there are charters available to cruise the bays and inlets that dominate the landscape or hire a kayak and explore at your own pace. 

There are two national parks within the Canterbury Region, Arthers Pass National Park and Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, both parks provide many outdoor activities and attractions in the region.

Arthers Pass is popular for hiking with high alpine walks possible during the summer months, there are around thirty Department Of Conservation huts available within the national park making long multiday treks possible.

 Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park has some of the highest mountain peaks in the region and is a popular place for mountain climbing, there is the Tasman Glacier located in the park and at 27 kms in length is a truly stunning sight.

Kaikoura further up the east coast provides many attractions and activities with Whale Watching the most popular activity in the area, hire a charter boat and see the stunning wildlife with whales, Dolphins and seals to watch year round.
