Nelson is a stunning region at the very top of New Zealand's South Island, and is home to three national parks, the Nelson Lakes National Park, Abel Tasman National Park and the lesser known Kahurangi National Park.

The Nelson Lakes National Park is spectacular place, with the start of the majestic Southern Alps which flow to the south, the park is home to beautiful alpine landscapes forests and clear blue lakes.

The national park provides 16 beautiful clear blue lakes scattered all through the area with Lake Rotoiti the most popular, this iconic lake is known the world over for the many photos that have been taken in front of the jetty on the lake shore.

The Nelson Lakes National Park provides many activities from skiing on the nearby Rainbow Ski Field, mountain biking in the many forests through out the area and some fantastic walks through the park there is also a world class trout fishery in the many rivers and lakes.

The Abel Tasman National Park is a coastal paradise and New Zealand's smallest national park, and is packed with activities and natural attractions, the Abel Tasman Track is located in the park and is a fantastic multi day walk along the stunning coastline.

Other activities available within the Abel Tasman National Park include kayaking the calm waters of the coastline you can rent kayaks in Nelson and other areas along the coast, sailing and cruising the ocean or just relaxing on the beautiful sandy beaches that are scattered through out the park.

The Kahurangi National Park is home to the Heaphy Track which is one of the Nine Great Walks of New Zealand, the Heaphy Track runs through a diverse range of landscapes from tussock grass lands to rain forests and along remote beaches, the track is around 82 kms long and is a multiday walk. 

The Kahurangi National Park provides plenty of other activities and attractions in the area, the landscape through out the area is complex and diverse and attracts fossil hunters and cavers to the many sink holes dotted through the landscape.

A popular attraction north of Nelson city is Farewell Spit, located at the Northern end of Golden Bay, the spit is a narrow sand formation at the very top of the South Island and is a popular place for beach walks and kayaking the calm waters of Golden Bay.
