Southland New Zealand

Southland is a mecca for the adventurous and thrill seekers alike, there is an activity to suit every one young or old, and with many out door pursuits available year round is a great place to visit any time of the year.

There are two national parks located in the Southland region, the world famous Fiordland National park the largest national park in New Zealand which was formed in 1952 and the Rakiura National park which was opened in 2002.

The Rakiura National park provides many hiking trails through out the area and is home to the Rakiura Track a fantastic 36KM walk through forests, along the beautiful coastline and sandy beaches well worth the effort the Rakiura Track is one of the nine great walks.

Southland is home to three other great walks of New Zealand, the world renowned Milford Track a fantastic 53 KM walk over three days including the Sutherland Falls the highest in New Zealand, the Routeburn Track a 32 KM walk and the Keplar Track which is a 60 KM walk around Lake TeAnau and surrounding areas.

Other notable walking tracks in Southland include the Hump Ridge Track a three day loop walk along the southern coast with fantastic views, there are many other less known walks dotted all through the Southland area catering for all types of hikers.

The world renowned Milford Sound is a great place to spend a day in Southland with cruises available through out the year, the views through the sound are breath taking with high water falls cascading down from the cliff tops into the water below.

Southland is also home to Lake Manapouri which is located in the Fiordland National park you can hire a kayak or cruise the lake in a boat and take in the stunning views of the rainforest and high mountain peaks that rise from the lake side.

The Southland region has the highest rain fall in New Zealand, and this is ideal for water falls that are dotted all through the area, the 22 metre high Mclean Falls are located in the Catlins Conservation Park and the Purakaunui Falls a fantastic cascading type water fall which is the most photographed water fall in New Zealand.

There are many other fantastic activities available year round in the Southland region including jet boating and charters, scenic flights over the high mountain peaks, surfing adventures and mountain biking so there is always something to keep you entertained in Southland.
