Wellington located at the very southern end of the North island and is New Zealand's capital city, the region is often referred to as the windy city, Wellington is where the cook straight ferries depart on there way to Picton in the Marlborough Sounds.

One of the most popular activities in Wellington is to ride the cable car, the bright red cable car departs from the Lambton Quay terminal and takes you through the Wellington shopping district and up to a look out where you can view the expanse of the city.

There is also the Cable Car Museum to visit while in Wellington city, the museum is located within the original winding house that raised and lowered the cable car to the summit, the museum displays the mechanism that worked from 1902 until 1978.

For the garden enthusiast there are three established gardens located in Wellington City, the Wellington Botanic Garden covering some 25 hectares was established way back in 1869 and is the largest gardens in the region.

Otari Wiltons Bush, which contains around 1200 species of plants and was established in 1926 by Dr Leonard Cockayne, Truby King Park which contains an historic house and gardens and is an heritage listed estate. 

The museum of New Zealand Te Papa, should be on your bucket list while visiting the Wellington region the museum contains treasures and New Zealand's history along with Maori Culture exhibits and various other displays.

Wairapa around one hour from Wellington is the wine region, here you can visit the boutique wineries that are dotted around the area and taste the finist wine from the district, you can also book the Martinborough Wine Tour which incorporates a day trip out of Wellington City.

Walking enthusiasts are not left out in Wellington as there many hiking trails in the area, a popular walk in the Wellington region is the Red Rocks Walk, which starts at Owhiro Bay and takes you out to the Red Rocks which were formed over 200 million years ago from volcanic activity.

One other popular walk is the Makara Track where you can enjoy stunning views of Wellingtons wild West Coast, the walk starts at Markara Beach and takes you up to a look out with fantastic views there are also gun emplacements from the second world war to view along the way.
